Where to Travel Backpack This Spring 2025

Spring is the perfect season for travel backpacking... the weather is mild (less extreme cold or extreme heat) and destinations around the world come alive with festivals, outdoor adventures, and budget-friendly opportunities. If you're planning your next adventure, here are the top five destinations to travel backpack this spring 2025 and why this season is the best time to visit!

Backpack Portugal 2025: The Ultimate European Backpacker’s Haven

Portugal continues to be a top destination for travel backpackers, thanks to its affordability (in comparison to the rest of Western Europe), public transport, and delicious local cuisine. Spring 2025 is particularly ideal, as it falls within the shoulder season... meaning fewer crowds and better prices compared to summer. The weather is warm but not scorching, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and truly one of my favorite countries to visit.

Why Backpack Portugal In Spring 2025?

Lower Prices: Airfare and accommodation are significantly cheaper before peak summer. Especially if you are coming from the USA, Canada, or the UK, Portugal is one of the least expensive places to fly to in mainland Europe.

Pleasant Weather: Ideal for exploring cities and hiking along coastal trails.

Festivals: Experience events like Lisbon’s IndieLisboa Film Festival and Porto’s Queima das Fitas (student celebrations).

Backpack Portugal Highlights:

Lisbon: Explore the pastel-colored streets of Alfama, ride the famous Tram 28, and enjoy stunning viewpoints like Miradouro de Santa Catarina. In fact, my favorite hostel in the entire world is located here. Definitely stop by Hostel Home if you go to Lisbon.

Porto: Wander through Ribeira, sip on port wine, and walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge. The Jardim do Morro Park right by this Bridge is one of my absolute favorite places in Porto; especially for sunset.

Azores: If you want to venture further, the Azores Islands offer breathtaking volcanic landscapes, hot springs, and coastal hikes.

Backpack Japan 2025: Cherry Blossoms & A Favorable Exchange Rate

Spring in Japan is synonymous with cherry blossom season, making it an unforgettable time to visit. In 2025, the favorable exchange rate for the Japanese yen makes Japan an even more budget-friendly destination for backpackers. Train travel with the JR Pass remains one of the best ways to explore the country affordably.

Why Backpack Japan In Spring 2025?

Weaker Yen: The exchange rate is in favor of many international travelers, making food, accommodations, and experiences more affordable. You would be surprise how cheap Japan is once you actually arrive there.

Cherry Blossom Season: From late March to April, parks and streets across Japan are painted in pink.

Mild Weather: Ideal for sightseeing and hiking. Remember that Japan also has a massive population so coming during the rainy/hot season to be on a crowded train just doesn't sound exciting to me.

Backpack Japan Highlights:

Tokyo: Enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Ueno Park or along the Meguro River.

Kyoto: Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and the historic Gion district.

Nakasendo Trail: A great budget-friendly alternative to the crowded cities, this historical hiking trail takes you through picturesque post towns between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Backpack Mexico 2025: Shoulder Season Magic & Affordable Adventures

Spring is an excellent time to visit Mexico before the hot summer kicks in. March to May is the perfect window to enjoy the country’s beaches, mountains, and cultural landmarks without the heavy crowds or high prices.

Why Backpack Mexico In Spring 2025?

Shoulder Season: Prices for flights and accommodations drop between winter and summer tourism peaks. The winter months are the most crowded with international tourists and the summer months are the most crowded with local tourists which makes spring the perfect time to visit.

Perfect Climate: Dry season means little rain and great conditions for outdoor exploration.

Festivals: Experience Semana Santa (Holy Week) with unique local traditions across the country.

Backpack Mexico Highlights:

Oaxaca: Explore colorful markets, try authentic mole, and hike in the Sierra Norte mountains.

Yucatán Peninsula: Swim in cenotes, visit Mayan ruins like Chichén Itzá, and relax on the beaches of Tulum.

Mexico City: A cultural powerhouse with world-class museums, street food, and vibrant neighborhoods like Roma and Coyoacán.

Backpack Greece 2025: Springtime Bliss Without the Crowds

Spring is one of the best times to visit Greece, as the weather is perfect for exploring ancient ruins and stunning islands without the overwhelming summer crowds. Plus, flight and ferry prices are lower before the summer surge.

Why Backpack Greece In Spring 2025?

Shoulder Season: Enjoy fewer tourists and more budget-friendly accommodation options.

Mild Weather: Perfect for island hopping and sightseeing without the extreme summer heat.

Wildflower Blooms: The countryside is lush and vibrant in spring.

Backpack Greece Highlights:

Athens: Explore the Acropolis, Plaka, and Monastiraki flea market.

Santorini & Naxos: Enjoy the stunning views of Santorini without the summer crowds, or head to the budget-friendly Naxos for beautiful beaches and authentic Greek charm.

Meteora: Backpackers looking for adventure should visit this UNESCO-listed site known for its monasteries perched on towering rock formations.

Backpack Vietnam 2025: A Backpacker’s Paradise in Ideal Conditions

Vietnam is a dream destination for backpackers, offering a mix of vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, and delicious street food. Spring 2025 is a particularly great time to visit, as the weather is dry and warm, perfect for exploring both the north and south.

Why Backpack Vietnam In Spring 2025?

Perfect Weather: March to May brings dry and comfortable temperatures across the country.

Budget-Friendly: Vietnam remains one of the most affordable destinations for backpackers. Unlike Japan, Vietnam has historically always had favorable exchange rates for international travelers. It's so cheap that last time I was there I bought a round of beer for the entire bar (small local bar, but still).

Local Festivals: Enjoy cultural events like the Hung Kings’ Festival in April.

Backpack Vietnam Highlights:

Hanoi: Wander the Old Quarter, savor street food like pho and banh mi, and explore Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Ha Giang Loop: Rent a motorbike and ride through one of the most breathtaking mountain routes in Southeast Asia.

Hoi An: Famous for its lantern-lit streets, tailor shops, and nearby An Bang Beach.

As somebody who has been to all five of these destinations (and some numerous times) you can't go wrong with any of them. If I really had to choose one, I would have to say Japan just because those very good exchange rates for international travelers wont last much longer. But besides that, all five are amazing and have something truly special to offer to Travel Backpackers.
