The Diverse World Of Backpackers - Who Is A Backpacker? What Is Backpacking?

Backpacking is more than just a mode of travel; it's a lifestyle that beckons adventure, self-discovery, and a connection with the world. Within the vibrant community of backpackers, we find a rich tapestry of individuals, each with their unique approach to exploring with a backpack.

What Are the Types of Backpackers?

The term "backpacker" can refer to a hiker, a traveller, or a camper. One of our missions is to help REDEFINE the backpacker market. Generation Nomad caters to Backpacker Travellers and since Backpacker Travellers fall in the middle of the two in regards to the amount of accessories they need and the size of their backpacks, their needs are overlooked by companies. We want to highlight this demographic with products specifically designed and curated for them.

Let's delve into the fascinating lifestyle of backpackers and what is an example of a backpacker. Shedding light on the diverse categories of backpackers from Backpacker Hikers, Backpacker Travellers and Backpacker Campers.

Backpacker Travellers

For those whose wanderlust knows no bounds, Backpack Travellers are the globetrotters of the backpacking world. Armed with a backpack(s) and a sense of curiosity, these guys traverse continents, immerse themselves in diverse cultures, and forge connections with people from all walks of life. Backpack Travellers are defined by their desire to experience the world authentically, often opting for diverse accommodations and transportation to truly absorb the essence of a destination.

Even within the scope of Backpack Travellers, there is a wide range of backpackers. This really depends on the budget and purpose of one's travels. Often people ask me what is an example of a backpacker? I have four examples:

Digital Nomads are individuals that leverage technology to work remotely while traveling. They have the flexibility to choose their destinations and often opt for locations with a good balance of work amenities and recreational opportunities. Digital Nomads can be freelancers, entrepreneurs, or remote employees who prioritize the ability to work from anywhere with a stable internet connection.

Backpacker Volunteers are individuals who combine travel with volunteer work. These travelers seek opportunities to contribute to meaningful projects in exchange for accommodation and, sometimes, meals. Backpacker Volunteers are motivated by a desire to make a positive impact or learn new skills while immersing themselves in different cultures.

Flash Packers are a modern breed of Travel Backpackers who combine elements of both luxury and budget travel. Flash Packers are willing to invest in higher-end gadgets, experiences, or accommodations. They seek a balance between affordability and comfort, often embracing technology and stylish travel gear. You may find them staying at nicer hostels or unique Airbnb experiences.

Budget Backpackers are travelers who prioritize cost-effective options in all aspects of their journey. They aim to minimize expenses on accommodation, transportation, and activities, allowing them to stretch their travel budget for longer periods. Budget Packers are resourceful and often find creative ways to explore destinations without breaking the bank.

What Type Of Backpacker Are You

Backpack Travelling has changed a lot especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. This is due to the rise of remote work and a generation that prioritizes experiences over things. I can see this just by the questions I've only started get asked in the last few years. What is a Digital Nomad? What is a Flash Packer? Etc. We'll save diving deeper into how Backpack Travelling has changed for another blog post.

Backpacker Campers & Backpacker Hikers

Backpack Campers: For the outdoorsy souls who find solace in the rustling of leaves and the crackling of a campfire, Backpack Campers are the embodiment of a symbiotic relationship with nature. These adventurers carry compact camping gear on their backs, ready to set up a tent beneath the stars and embrace the simplicity of life in the great outdoors. Backpack Campers often seek remote destinations, away from the hustle and bustle of civilization, where the only sounds are those of the wilderness. They also carry around larger backpacks and a lot more gear to live for a time period in nature.

Backpack Hikers: Venturing beyond the beaten path, Backpacker Hikers are the trailblazers of the backpacking community. Armed with sturdy hiking boots and a passion for exploration, these individuals embark on long-distance hikes, conquering challenging terrains and reaching breathtaking summits. Backpacker Hikers are driven by the thrill of the journey and the unparalleled beauty that can only be witnessed by those who are willing to put in the effort to get there.

What Is A Backpacker? How Many Liters Should A Backpack Be?

The term "backpacker" encompasses individuals engaged in hiking, traveling, or camping activities. Despite falling between these two extremes in terms of required accessories and backpack size, the needs of backpacker travelers are often disregarded by companies. With backpacks available on the market ranging from 5L to 100L in capacity, let's briefly explore the ideal size for each type of backpacker.

For Hikers: Hiking backpacks are engineered to carry essentials for day hikes or multi-day treks, prioritizing comfort, weight distribution, and ventilation for prolonged periods on the trail. Hikers typically require smaller backpacks, ranging from 10L to 50L, depending on whether they are embarking on a day hike or a multi-day trek.

For Campers: Camping backpacks are tailored to accommodate gear for overnight camping trips, offering ample storage space for tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and other essentials. Campers typically opt for larger backpacks, ranging from 50L to 100L, as they need to carry a substantial amount of gear to survive a night in the wild, varying based on the quantity of gear and number of people.

* Given that hikers require backpacks ranging from 10L to 50L and campers opt for backpacks ranging from 50L to 100L, where do travelers fit in? *

For Travelers: Travel backpacks are specifically designed for globetrotters and digital nomads, combining the convenience of luggage with the portability of backpacks. They are well-suited for navigating airports, train stations, and the streets of foreign cities. On average, backpack travelers typically opt for backpacks with a capacity between 40L to 70L.
