Smart Travel Hacks: How to Save Big on Your Next Trip

Whether your ideal holiday is sunning it up on a European beach or exploring the frozen conditions of Antarctica, travelling and seeing new places is the highlight of many people’s years. But it goes without saying that travelling can be expensive.

For larger groups in particular, seeing different parts of the world has become an expense that many cannot afford. If you’re stressed about the cost of your next trip, here are some smart travel hacks that will save you money on your next adventure.

Book Flights in Advance

Saving money on your trips can start before you arrive at your destination. One of the biggest savings you can make is on your flights, and the biggest savings to be made usually come when booking flights well ahead of time. Another good time to book flights is during popular sale times; many airlines will have a summer sale and even a Black Friday sale.

Save on Baggage

Luggage can be one of the costliest parts of your trip, especially if you’re travelling as a family and taking multiple suitcases. If you are travelling for a short duration, consider taking only carry-on luggage

If you are taking heavier baggage, try to keep bags to a minimum by packing light. The best way to do this is by creating a list before you start packing, this ensures you don’t start throwing all your clothes into a suitcase. Other ways to maximise space include using packing cubes and rolling clothes.

Research Spending Abroad

A lot of banks will charge you for using your card abroad so it’s worth researching your bank’s policies ahead of your trip to avoid getting stung by any unexpected fees. Newer digital banks tend to offer generous rules around spending abroad so it may be worth exploring banks such as Monzo, Revolut and Chase. Another option is planning a strict budget ahead of your trip and doing all your spending in cash.

Take Advantage of Public Transport

It can be tempting to travel by taxi when on holiday. While this may be the most convenient option, it certainly isn’t the most cost effective. To save money, spend a bit of time before your trip getting your head around public transport links. Travelling around by train and bus will save you a lot of money and give you the added benefit of exploring your location like a local.

Research Free Attractions

Some of the world’s best attractions are completely free. The National Museum of the US Air Force, the Golden Temple and Lake Bacalar can be explored without spending a penny. There’s a good chance that wherever you are heading, there’ll be some picturesque sights and fun-filled attractions that are free. If you’re travelling as a family, it’s also worth searching for activities where kids go free.

With more and more people facing financial difficulties and seeking debt advice, travelling has become out of reach for many. While these tips will help you to save money, it’s worth considering your own personal circumstances.
